Isotretinoin is a powerful oral medication used to treat severe, nodular acne that has not responded to other treatments, such as antibiotics. It is a retinoid, derived from vitamin A, and is known for its high effectiveness in clearing severe acne and preventing scarring. It was originally marketed under the brand name Accutane, and is now available under various other brand names. 

Minoxidil is used in the treatment of Hypertension (high blood pressure), hair loss and Heart Failure. It is most effective in treating hereditary hair loss or thinning at the top of the scalp, not in front. Rarely, it may be used to treat high blood pressure.How Minoxidil worksMinoxidil is a potassium channel opener. Its vasodilation action expands the blood vessels to promote blood flow, thereby decreasing blood pressure to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The topical application of Minoxidil on your scalp helps in increasing blood flow through the vasodilation process. This increased blood flow provides more nutrition and oxygen to the hair follicle, which prevents hair cell death and also enhances new hair growth. This is how it works to treat your hair loss (alopecia).

Clomifene, also known as clomiphene citrate, is a medication used to treat female infertility by inducing ovulation. It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that works by stimulating the release of hormones that promote egg development and release from the ovaries. Common side effects include pelvic discomfort, enlarged ovaries, and hot flashes. 

How it works

• Clomifene blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, which prompts the pituitary gland to release more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).
• These hormones stimulate the ovaries to develop and mature follicles, leading to ovulation.
• The medication can increase the chances of a multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, or more). 

Cephalexin (brand names include Keflex) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in various parts of the body. It is ineffective against viral infections like the common cold or flu. 
How it worksCephalexin kills bacteria by disrupting the synthesis of their protective cell walls. It does this by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are crucial for building the bacterial cell wall. This weakens the wall, causing the bacterial cells to rupture and die. 
Common usesCephalexin treats a wide range of mild-to-moderate bacterial infections, including: 
Respiratory tract infections: Such as pneumonia and streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat).

• Skin and soft tissue infections: Caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
• Ear infections: Otitis media.
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Including pyelonephritis and cystitis.
• Bone and joint infections.
• Dental infections. 

Itraconazole is available in different oral forms, including capsules, tablets, and a liquid solution. The appropriate formulation depends on the type of infection being treated. 
How to takeProper administration of itraconazole is crucial because the different formulations are absorbed differently by the body and are not interchangeable. 
Capsules and tablets: Should be taken with a full meal to maximize absorption.

• Oral solution: Is best taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. For mouth or throat infections, the liquid may be swished in the mouth for several seconds before swallowing.
• Duration: Take the medication for the full prescribed length of time, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely treated.
• Antacids: If you are taking antacids or other acid-reducing medications, take them at least two hours before or after itraconazole capsules. To improve absorption of the capsules, you can take them with an acidic beverage like a non-diet cola. 

Fluconazole (brand name Diflucan®) is a prescription antifungal medication used to treat various fungal and yeast infections throughout the body. It is available in different forms, including oral tablets, a liquid suspension, and an injectable solution. 

How it worksFluconazole works by disrupting the cell membrane of the fungus or yeast, which either kills the organism or prevents its growth. It is not effective against bacterial or viral infections. 

Biovorin is a medication that contains leucovorin calcium, a form of folic acid. It is used in cancer treatment to protect healthy cells from the toxic effects of methotrexate and to treat megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency. It is available in both tablet and injectable forms. 

Bupropion is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and to prevent seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is sometimes called autumn-winter seasonal depression. It is also used as part of a support program to help people stop smoking. Bupropion is sold under different brand names.

Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole that presents a wide spectrum anthelmintic effect. It is used against a number of gastrointestinal parasites including giardia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the Taenia genus of tapeworms, pinworms, aelurostrongylus, paragonimiasis, strongyles, and Strongyloides.

Anastrozole (brand name Arimidex) is a type of hormone therapy for treating breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor that works by reducing the amount of estrogen in the body, which can slow or stop the growth of certain breast cancer tumors that depend on estrogen to grow.

UsesAnastrozole is prescribed for postmenopausal women with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer and may be used in the following circumstances: 

• Early breast cancer: Administered after surgery or in addition to other treatments to reduce the risk of the cancer returning.
• Advanced or metastatic breast cancer: Used as a first-line treatment for cancer that has spread to other areas of the body.
• Following Tamoxifen treatment: For treating advanced breast cancer that has progressed despite treatment with tamoxifen.
• High-risk prevention: For postmenopausal women with a high risk of developing breast cancer due to family history.

• Treating hyperprolactinemia: Cabergoline is a first-line treatment for conditions related to high prolactin levels. These include:
  • Prolactinomas: Benign (non-cancerous) tumors on the pituitary gland.
  • Galactorrhea: Abnormal production of breast milk.
  • Fertility problems and irregular menstrual cycles in women caused by high prolactin levels.
  • Infertility and sexual problems in men caused by high prolactin levels.
• Suppressing lactation: The medication can be used to stop breast milk production following childbirth, abortion, or miscarriage.
• Parkinson's disease: In some cases, cabergoline is used to manage Parkinson's disease. 

Apixaban (brand name Eliquis) is an oral anticoagulant medication used to prevent and treat dangerous blood clots. It is a type of blood thinner that works by blocking clotting factor Xa, a key protein involved in the blood-clotting process. 

UsesApixaban is prescribed for several conditions involving blood clots, including: 

Atrial fibrillation (AFib): To reduce the risk of stroke in patients with AFib not caused by heart valve disease.

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): To treat blood clots that typically form in the legs and to prevent their recurrence.
• Pulmonary embolism (PE): To treat blood clots that travel to and block arteries in the lungs and to prevent them from recurring.
• Post-surgery: To prevent DVT and PE in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery. 

Pramipexole, sold under brand names such as Mirapex, is a non-ergot dopamine agonist used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS). It can be taken orally in either immediate-release or extended-release formulations. 
Mechanism of actionPramipexole works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, particularly the D2 subfamily, and shows a high affinity for the D3 receptor. 
It mimics the effect of dopamine, a natural chemical messenger that helps control movement.

• In Parkinson's disease, it helps alleviate motor symptoms like tremors and stiffness by compensating for low dopamine levels. 
• Primary uses

• Parkinson's disease (PD): Pramipexole can be used alone in early-stage PD or in combination with levodopa in later stages when levodopa's effects may become inconsistent.
• Restless legs syndrome (RLS): It is used to treat the moderate-to-severe symptoms of RLS, a condition that causes an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, especially at night.
• Off-label uses: Pramipexole has also been used off-label for conditions such as bipolar depression and fibromyalgia. 

   

Levothyroxine, also known as L-thyroxine, is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), which is naturally produced by the thyroid gland. It is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States and is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. 

Uses and function

• Hypothyroidism: Levothyroxine replaces the missing hormone, helping to regulate the body's metabolism and energy levels. This can reverse symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, and poor tolerance to cold.
• Thyroid cancer: It can be used alongside surgery and radioactive iodine therapy to treat certain types of thyroid cancer.
• Goiter: It may be used to treat or prevent goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).
• Myxedema coma: An injectable form is available for treating myxedema coma, a severe form of hypothyroidism. 

Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the pineal gland in the brain that helps regulate the body's sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. In response to darkness, melatonin production increases, signaling to the body that it is time to sleep. A decrease in production occurs when the body is exposed to light. 
Melatonin is also available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement, though its safety and effectiveness are not as well-studied as prescription medications. 

Mirtaz  Tablet is used in the treatment of depression to help lift mood, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep and appetite. It may support emotional balance and restore daily functioning, enabling individuals to engage more fully in personal and social activities.

Fluoxetine is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It's often used to treat depression, and sometimes obsessive compulsive disorder and bulimia. It works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.

Hydroxychloroquine (brand names include Plaquenil) is a prescription medication used to treat autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and to prevent or treat certain types of malaria. It belongs to a class of drugs known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and antimalarials. 

Uses

• Autoimmune diseases: For conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), and rheumatoid arthritis, hydroxychloroquine works by suppressing the immune system to reduce inflammation, swelling, pain, and stiffness. The effects of the drug for these conditions are gradual and can take weeks to months to become noticeable.
• Malaria: It can be used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria caused by susceptible parasites. However, its use for this purpose is limited in areas with known resistance. 

Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It is also used to treat pimples and abscesses (usually on the face) that are caused by rosacea, also known as acne rosacea or adult acne

Erlotinib (brand name Tarceva) is a targeted cancer therapy that belongs to a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It is used primarily for the treatment of specific types of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and pancreatic cancer. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, erlotinib works by specifically blocking signals that promote the growth of cancer cells.

Mechanism of actionErlotinib targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a protein found on both healthy and cancerous cells. Some cancer cells, including those in certain types of NSCLC, have an overabundance of EGFR, which can trigger uncontrolled cell growth. 

EGFR Inhibition: Erlotinib binds to the intracellular tyrosine kinase domain of the EGFR, preventing it from signaling for cell multiplication.

• Tumor Growth Blocked: By blocking the EGFR pathway, erlotinib helps to stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
• Patient Screening: Before a patient is given erlotinib for NSCLC, a diagnostic test is used to confirm the presence of specific EGFR gene mutations, such as exon 19 deletions or exon 21 substitutions. 

Capecitabine, brand name Xeloda, is an oral chemotherapy drug used to treat a variety of cancers, including breast, colorectal, and stomach cancer. It is an antimetabolite that works by interfering with the growth of cancer cells. 

How it worksCapecitabine is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into an active chemotherapy agent inside the body. 

When absorbed, it is metabolized into the drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), often at higher concentrations within tumor tissue than in healthy tissue.

• The 5-FU then becomes incorporated into the cancer cells' genetic material, specifically interfering with the synthesis of both DNA and RNA.
• This disruption halts the cancer cells' ability to replicate and repair themselves, ultimately causing them to die. 
• Medical uses

Capecitabine is prescribed to treat several types of cancer, either alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs. 

Colorectal cancer: Used for both metastatic cases and to help prevent the cancer from returning after surgery for stage III colon cancer.

• Breast cancer: Prescribed for metastatic breast cancer, particularly in cases where previous treatments have failed.
• Stomach and esophageal cancer: Used in combination with other drugs for advanced or metastatic cases.
• Pancreatic cancer: Sometimes used with other chemotherapy drugs following surgery to remove the tumor. 

   

Temozolomide, sold under the brand name Temodar, is a chemotherapy drug used to treat certain types of brain cancer. It is an oral or intravenous medication classified as an alkylating agent, which works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells to inhibit their growth. 

How it worksTemozolomide is converted in the body to its active compound, which adds a methyl group to the DNA of cancer cells. This action, known as alkylation, primarily occurs at guanine residues in the DNA, causing damage that triggers the cancer cells to die. 

Temozolomide is particularly effective for brain tumors because it can cross the blood-brain barrier. 
Conditions treatedTemozolomide is primarily prescribed for certain brain cancers, including: 

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM): This is an aggressive form of brain cancer. Temozolomide is used for both newly diagnosed patients (in combination with radiation) and for recurring tumors.

• Anaplastic astrocytoma: For this type of tumor, it is used in patients whose cancer has progressed despite other treatments. 

   

Finasteride is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. It is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, a class of drugs that works by preventing the body from producing dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to both conditions. 

Primary uses and dosages

• Male pattern hair loss: The usual dosage is 1 mg once daily. It works by lowering DHT levels in the scalp, which can reverse the balding process. Consistent, long-term use is necessary to maintain benefits. The medication is not for use in women or children.
• Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): For an enlarged prostate, the typical dose is 5 mg once daily. By blocking the production of DHT, finasteride can shrink the prostate, improving urinary symptoms such as frequent urination and poor flow.
• Off-label use: Finasteride may be used off-label to treat hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in women, though this is less common. 

Lapatinib, sold under the brand name Tykerb, is a small-molecule, oral chemotherapy drug used to treat certain types of HER2-positive breast cancer. It functions as a dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks the HER2/neu and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathways, which are often overactive in cancer cells. 

UsesLapatinib is typically used in combination therapy to treat advanced or metastatic (cancer that has spread) breast cancer. 

With capecitabine: Used in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer that has progressed despite treatment with other therapies, including anthracyclines, taxanes, and trastuzumab.

• With an aromatase inhibitor (e.g., letrozole): Used for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive and HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. 

  

As a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, nintedanib blocks multiple receptor and non-receptor tyrosine kinases, which are signaling proteins important for cell growth and metabolism. By inhibiting these specific kinases—including those for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFR), fibroblast growth factor (FGFR), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGFR)—nintedanib impedes processes that cause fibrosis and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels). This action slows the progression of scarring and fibrosis. 

Medical usesNintedanib is approved for the treatment of several serious conditions:

• Certain types of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): In combination with other medications like docetaxel. 

Hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine with sedative properties used to treat anxiety, allergic skin conditions, and nausea. It is sold under the brand names Atarax and Vistaril, among others.   How it worksHydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine that acts on the central nervous system to produce its therapeutic effects. 

• H1 receptor inverse agonist: It blocks the effects of histamine, a chemical released by the body during allergic reactions, which reduces symptoms like itching and swelling.
• Central nervous system (CNS) depression: The medication suppresses activity in certain areas of the brain, producing a calming effect that helps to relieve anxiety and promote sleep.
• Anticholinergic activity: Hydroxyzine has anticholinergic effects, though milder than some other first-generation antihistamines, that can also contribute to its sedative action.

Prednisolone is a powerful corticosteroid medication that is prescribed to treat a wide range of conditions by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system. It is available by prescription in forms such as tablets, liquids, and eye drops.
